No one is hiring me to write for NYT for the same reason I'm writing you now - because I didn't CATCH this comment until almost TWO YEARS AFTER YOU WROTE IT. In other words, my life is in a hole. I am sad reading my thoughts on Sherman Alexie now, after the allegations have come out about him intimidating and abusing younger colleagues and students. :( :( HAHAHA Columbus had a blog! I haven't read The People's History but I agree with you, there are grievous holes in the way students learn about "American" history. On the one hand, I'm embarrassed by my own ignorance. On the other hand, I'm so grateful I have the rest of my adult life to learn about all these accounts I missed before. I want to get my mom to watch it, but HOW? I am putting that Sherman Alexie memoir to the top of my freaking list. And also, just picked up Howard Zinn's The People's History of the United States. I'm on page 8 or something silly like that but it's already blowing my mind. He excerpts Columbus's log (early lingo for blog?) and it's devastating, talking about reaching The Bahamas and the people he found there, "With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want." And then of course he does. Why am I just reading this now at age almost 36?????Amelia Morrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09374986152389436014noreply@blogger.com
