No one is hiring me to write for NYT for the same reason I'm writing you now - because I didn't CATCH this comment until almost TWO YEARS AFTER YOU WROTE IT. In other words, my life is in a hole. I am sad reading my thoughts on Sherman Alexie now, after the allegations have come out about him intimidating and abusing younger colleagues and students. :( :( HAHAHA Columbus had a blog! I haven't read The People's History but I agree with you, there are grievous holes in the way students learn about "American" history. On the one hand, I'm embarrassed by my own ignorance. On the other hand, I'm so grateful I have the rest of my adult life to learn about all these accounts I missed before. But I saw it when I was so young, it's entirely possible I had more knowledge of Beetlejuice than I did James Audubon (both are really weird, though). I had a real thing for Michael Keaton back in the day. I can't believe your kids can handle that movie! Everyone's makeup is so terrifying. And young, skinny Alec Baldwin! He's not scary, but it's sort of mind-blowing to see him in those early movies now. I HIGHLY recommend The Great Beauty, but it's long and rambly, so buckle up for some lovely, meaningful meandering. MOSTLY though, I came here to say that last night we watched Beetlejuice with the kids as it's one of Matt's and my favorite things to do--watch movies we grew up on with them--and guess what makes a split-second appearance? James Audubon's Birds of America! Also worth noting? Beetlejuice gropes the woman ghost for laughs. :( :( :( :(
xoxoxx Amelia Morrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09374986152389436014noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2846773082587222338.post-40182031900154643432018-10-30T12:09:30.989-04:002018-10-30T12:09:30.989-04:00Oh yes, I agree - I don't think they're ex...Oh yes, I agree - I don't think they're exceptions at all, sadly. And I was so troubled by that interview with the Arrested Development cast defending Jeffry Tambor, too. Jason Bateman was a favorite of mine; it's all big and unwieldy, but so essential to examine. It's true that small children are a magnet to presence - their company is so healing to me. What a gorgeous title is From a Low and Quiet Sea! For a light read, have you ever read Ann Patchett's essays This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage? Also, I'm revisiting Party of One right now, by Dave Holmes, which I talk too much about but seriously makes me laugh out loud. My library copy was still dog-eared from the last time I checked it out, when I cried I laughed so hard. I love a good music/pop-culture romp. Steve Almond's Candyfreak is light and fun, but it will make you go out and buy trashy chocolate. I also liked Almond's novel written with Julianna Baggot, Which Brings Me to You, and Julianna's first novel, Girl Talk, remains one of my favorites. Good luck! I'd like to think they're the exceptions, although more & more I'm not so sure. And comments other men (Jason Bateman, Matt Damon) make in defense are even more troubling.
I wish I still had young kids to fill my hours so that the awful mess of the past two years would not affect me so.
Just read Idaho, From a Low and Quiet Sea & Small Animals.
